1975:<\/strong>\u00a0Brothers Peter and Dick Dreissigacker create a set of carbon fiber oars in their California apartment kitchen while training for the Montreal Olympic trials. Although they were unsuccessful at the trials, the prototype oars attract attention.<\/p>

October 1976:<\/strong>\u00a0Peter and Dick head east in their bread truck searching for a location to pursue building carbon fiber oars.<\/p>

November 1976:<\/strong>\u00a0The brothers buy an abandoned dairy farm in Vermont and convert it to a “tinkerer’s paradise” where they can pursue their inventions.<\/p>

Summer 1977:<\/strong>\u00a0The US Women\u2019s Pair, Anne Warner and Anita DeFrantz, agree to row with Concept2 oars and use them in the World Championships.<\/p>

1978\u20131979:<\/strong>\u00a0College crews using Concept2 oars experience increases in speed. Orders substantially increase.<\/p>

1980:<\/strong>\u00a0Concept2 has eight employees working in the shop in the barn. Oars ship worldwide.<\/p>

Early 1981:<\/strong>\u00a0Peter and Dick decide to create a winter training device for rowers. Peter nails his old bicycle to the floor of the barn and pulls on the free end of the chain\u2014the indoor rower is born.<\/p>

Fall 1981:<\/strong>\u00a0Concept2 launches the Model A Indoor Rower or \u201cerg\u201d (ergometer).<\/p>

1982:<\/strong>\u00a0The CRASH-B rowing club in Boston calls and is interested in hosting an indoor rowing competition. The sport of indoor rowing has grown ever since, and there is now a World Rowing Indoor Championship that takes place in a different country each year.<\/p>

1984:<\/strong>\u00a0With 12 employees, Concept2 grows too big for the barn and moves to the Morrisville Industrial Park. The only neighbors are a craft supplier and wood stove company.<\/p>

1986:<\/strong>\u00a0The Model B Indoor Rower is launched with a revised design including an added flywheel cover for safety, improved comfort and a powerful Performance Monitor.<\/p>

1990:<\/strong>\u00a0The majority of crews are now rowing with Concept2 oars worldwide.<\/p>

1991:<\/strong>\u00a0The Big Blade is introduced. An asymmetric hatchet-shaped blade, the Big Blade appeared to be 1\u20132% faster than existing designs.<\/p>

1992:<\/strong>\u00a0The Big Blade is prominently used in the Barcelona Olympics.<\/p>

1993:<\/strong>\u00a0The Model C Indoor Rower is introduced. Its features include a new flywheel housing and a redesigned monorail and footstretcher.<\/p>

1996:<\/strong>\u00a0Concept2 introduces an adjustable length system for oars, allowing the same oar to be used for different conditions and crews.<\/p>

1997:<\/strong>\u00a0The Smoothie blade is introduced. Similar to the Big Blade but without a central spine, it is cleaner and more efficient in the water.<\/p>

2000:<\/strong>\u00a0Concept2 introduces the Concept2 Slide, an accessory that brings an on-water feel to indoor rowing and also allows for team training. Concept2 also launches the DYNO, a strength training device.<\/p>

2003:<\/strong>\u00a0The Model D Indoor Rower is introduced. Quieter and smoother than its predecessors, it also has an ergonomic new handle and a new monitor, the PM3.<\/p>

August 2006:<\/strong>\u00a0Concept2 launches the Model E Indoor Rower. Offered alongside the Model D, the Model E features a PM4 monitor, 6\u201d higher seat for easier accessibility, sturdier frame, double coated finish for durability, and nickel-plated chain.<\/p>

December 2006:<\/strong>\u00a0The Fat2 blade is introduced. The latest design based on everything Concept2 knows about how blades move through the water, it offers the greatest potential for increasing boat speed.<\/p>

June 2009:<\/strong>\u00a0Concept2 launches the SkiErg, a ski ergometer and training tool that brings a favorite winter cross-training indoors and makes it accessible to anyone.<\/p>

November 2010:<\/strong>\u00a0Concept2 installs the first four of seven photovoltaic solar trackers, which help produce a percentage of our electricity needs.<\/p>

December 2010:<\/strong>\u00a0Concept2 launches the\u00a0Dynamic Indoor Rower<\/a>, a machine that more closely simulates rowing a boat on the water.<\/p>

May 2011:<\/strong>\u00a0Concept2 introduces the Dynamic Link, allowing users to connect two or more Dynamic Indoor Rowers to create a team rowing experience.<\/p>

August 2014:<\/strong>\u00a0Concept2 releases an updated\u00a0SkiErg<\/a>\u00a0with a new look, color and an internal drive mechanism that improves cord wear and allows for both double-pole and single-stick technique. It also features a new monitor, the PM5.<\/p>

January 2016:<\/strong>\u00a0The Bantam Sculls are developed and released as a low-cost sculling oar. The Bantam Sculls incorporate the injection-molded Compact blade, a durable plastic option that is 10 cm shorter than a Smoothie2 blade.<\/p>

August 2017:<\/strong>\u00a0Concept2 releases the\u00a0BikeErg<\/a>. With the same flywheel and Performance Monitor as the indoor rower and SkiErg, the BikeErg brings to cycling the strengths and features we’ve brought to rowing and cross-country skiing.<\/p>

December 2019:<\/strong>\u00a0The Comp Blade is developed and released. This combines the best elements of our existing blade designs to create a lightweight, efficient, stable, and easy-to-row competitive blade.<\/p>

May 2021:<\/strong>\u00a0Concept2 begins offering two leg options\u2014standard and tall\u2014for the Concept2 RowErg The standard legs give a 14 inch (36 cm) seat height while the taller legs make the seat 20 inches (51 cm) from the floor.\u00a0<\/p>

July 2022:<\/strong>\u00a0Concept2 releases a major update to their free app,\u00a0ErgData<\/a>. For use with all Concept2 machines, this release adds several new features, including the ability to set the monitor directly, take part in the Workout of the Day, and allowing users to join the Real Time Loop virtual course.<\/p>

May 2023:<\/strong>\u00a0The Skinny Coastal Shaft was released for the sport of coastal rowing. Significant improvements in durability and minimal impact on weight make this shaft perfect for an extreme sport that requires a durable, yet agile, oar.\u00a0<\/p>

January 2025:<\/strong>\u00a0Concept2\u2019s ownership is transferred to the\u00a0Concept2 Perpetual Purpose Trust<\/a>. This ensures the vision and mission of Concept2 is preserved for the future to come.<\/p>
